Numerous studies highlight the benefits of reading, how can we motivate our children to crack open a good book?

10 tips to encourage a teen to read:

Lead by Example : The best way to create a culture of reading in your home is to read as much as possible.

Freedom to Choose : Allow them to read whatever they find engaging (graphic novels, cookbooks, romance, horror…..)

Discuss what they read : Ask questions and encourage debate.

Share their Excitement : Have your teen recommend a book for you, and you can in turn recommend a book for your teen. After you have both read each others' selections, set aside a special time for talking about the books.

Look for books at their reading level : Books and stories that are too easy (below a teen’s reading level) are boring. Books that are too hard (above a teen’s reading level) are frustrating. The trick is finding a “just right” book.

Find a compelling series : Whether teenagers are into adventures or fantasy novels, there is a book series for everyone. All you have to do is find out what they love and get them to read the first selection. Once they get a taste of the set, they will definitely want to keep reading to find out what happens next.

Look for books that have corresponding movies or plays : One way to get teens excited about reading is to find books that also exist in other formats. Try reading a book together about a month before the movie version comes out, and then watch the movie together to see how it compares.

Encourage teens to try different genres : Many people default to fiction (especially novels) when they are providing reading material. It’s important to offer teens a wide selection of literary styles. Encourage a wide variety, even once your teen expresses a preference for one genre. Your child might be interested in a unexpected book or story, which will open up new avenues.

Create a distraction-free reading environment : Create (and regularly access) reading-friendly spaces at home and at school. Loud noises, poor lighting and numerous distractions will not help provide an enjoyable reading experience, and are likely to lead to frustration.

Keep a book with the child all times: Children love collecting. Make your child’s book collection a point of personal pride and identity. Plan for long-term storage for the best of this collection.
