Judith Kerr dies aged 95

Anna Judith Gertrud Helene Kerr  was a German-born British writer and illustrator. She created both enduring picture books such as the Mog series and The Tiger Who Came to Tea and acclaimed novels for older children such as the semi-autobiographical When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, which gave a child's-eye view of the Second World War. Born in the Weimar Republic, of Jewish background, she moved to Britain with her family in 1933 during the rise of the Nazis.

Kerr only started publishing books in her 40s, and never gave up working. Her work was funny, warm and often taught us something without us even realising.

"I always longed for a cat because as a refugee I couldn't have one. When Tom and I moved into our house, we acquired a rather eccentric cat called Mog. She almost never meowed, but made wonderfully expressive faces instead."

The Mog in the picture books is based on all of Kerr's cats.

Quotes :

“We’ll come back,” said Papa.
“I know,” said Anna... “But it won’t be the same - we won’t belong. Do you think we’ll ever really belong anywhere?”
“I suppose not,” said Papa. “Not the way people belong who have lived in one place all their lives. But we’ll belong a little in lots of places, and I think that may be just as good.”
―
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

"You see a lady sitting there and she's not doing anything and you tend to forget that of course she wasn't always a little old lady. There's all this colored stuff inside her, it's all inside, bubbling." (Judith Kerr)

"It's not a thing you should do, i never think about telling small children what to think". (Judith Kerr)

"Sophie opened the door, and there was a big, furry, stripy tiger. The tiger said, "Excuse me, but I'm very hungry. Do you think I could have tea with you?"  - The Tiger Who Came to Tea
