In order for students to achieve in maths, science, English, history, geography, and other subjects, reading skills must be developed to the point that most of them are automatic.

The following suggestions have been beneficial to many parents:

- Have a family reading time. Just 15 minutes of daily practice is sufficient to increase their reading fluency.

- It is important to set aside a regular time to read to your children every day. Seeing you read will inspire your children to read.

- Surround your children with reading material. Tempt your kids to read by having a large supply of appealing books and magazines at their reading level,  some for reading enjoyment and some with information about hobbies and interests.

- Show enthusiasm for your children's reading. Your reaction has a great influence on how hard they will try to become good readers.

- Encourage activities that require reading — for example, cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite (reading directions), or identifying an interesting bird's nest or a shell collected at the beach (using a reference book).

- Reading for pleasure and information develops reading interests and offers children the opportunity to practice their reading skills in meaningful ways.
