Tui was born July 31 in Venezuela, and lived in Asuncion, Paraguay; Miami, Florida; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before moving to New Jersey in high school, where she started doing theatre—mostly backstage work. Sutherland graduated in 1998, after which she abandoned her ideas of a career in theater in favor of a career in fiction writing, which she found to be more stable.

She has written about 50 books for children and teens, ranging in age from sticker books and easy-to-reads to middle-grade and YA novels.

She is the author of the best-selling series Wings of Fire, a big epic dragon fantasy that’ll be at least fifteen books long, plus two related stand-alones and graphic novel adaptations . . . The fantasy fiction Wings of Fire series has developed a cult following across the world, popular with middle grade through to adult readers alike. And it is no wonder thanks to Sutherland’s extraordinary, detailed storytelling and the wonderful cast of fanciful dragons she has imagined.

These titles are supported by a compilation of short stories, a number of Legends titles and a series of graphic novel interpretations of the original series.
